Some of the party had never seen snow before. One in particular, who had lived all his life in Kenya until coming to university in England, had read about it in books and seen pictures of it, and had tried to imagine what it was like. But the reality was quite different, and he was excited. As we walked and climbed up the steep side of the mountain that January day, he and the others had great fun making large footprints in the deepening snowdrifts, throwing snowballs at each other, and putting out their tongues to taste what the snow would be like as it swirled around us, soft and enticing.
