John 14.22-31

‘I’m going to tell the whole world about it!’

She had just got engaged. This was the moment she’d dreamed about. The happiest day of her life. She wanted everyone to know.

But what did she mean by ‘the world’?

We found out quite quickly. It meant, basically, working through her list of telephone numbers and having a breathless, excited call with each of the people on it. That must have been about thirty people, each with their familes, say three more each: 120 people, a small drop in the large ocean called ‘the world’. Then there was the announcement in the newspaper, which must have been seen by ten thousand or so; a significant step up from 120, but still not that many. But that was as far as it went. That was ‘the world’, for better or for worse...
