The camel was called Michael.
He stood, with his owner, outside the walls of Jerusalem. Our day’s tour was over, and one member of the party at least was keen to do something different. I went with her to speak to the camel’s owner, one of the many Arabs who eke out a living as best they can in that spot. Before we knew what was happening he had half lifted, half pushed both of us onto the camel’s back. Then he tapped the camel on its shoulder and shouted ‘Hallelujah!’...
