I stood at the bottom of the rock face. It was cold. The sun never penetrated that side of the mountain. I looked at the massive boulders around the foot of the climb, and then let my eye wander up the different routes, made famous by television programmes and glossy books as well as in specialist climbing literature. Up, and up, and up went the rock. I could just make out, as tiny coloured dots way above me, two or three groups of climbers. Some had started in the small hours that morning. One group had obviously begun the previous day. They had spent the night tied to the rock half a mile up, and were now making further progress...
