He came to see me early in the morning. He was a bit nervous at telling a clergyman how he was feeling, but he was determined to do it anyway.

He told me he hadn’t been able to sleep too well the last few nights. He had a sense that his work wasn’t going too well; his heart didn’t seem to be in it. He was restless and couldn’t figure out why. For the last few years he’d devoted himself single-mindedly to the grand scheme he’d worked out. He would get a degree, study for an MBA, find the right company, start off up the business ladder. Now here he was, halfway through, on the road to success. And yet something wasn’t right.

‘Richard,’ I said, feeling it was a rather silly question, ‘what do you really want to do?’...
