Description
The Third Sunday Before Advent
Wisdom of Solomon 6.12–16
1 Thessalonians 4.13–18
Matthew 25.1–13
You should only treat yourself to Wisdom of Solomon ch. 6 if you are prepared to live with the rest. The righteous and wise are persecuted and killed by the wicked and foolish; but God knows them, and they will be vindicated. Lady Wisdom has piloted the little ship of God’s covenant people throughout its long history, and the raging storms of pagan empire cannot and will not swamp or sink it. No wonder many in the early Church loved this book, seeing it as a prophecy of their own struggle against pagan force in general and Rome in particular.
Still interested in Wisdom? She is not just eager to be known, found by those who get up early, offering release from care. She is the one who strengthens the resolve of God’s people to stand in the evil day; she will guide monarchs in their unenviable and often misunderstood tasks. Seek wisdom, and you will get, not the interesting but unthreatening life of the dilettante intellectual, but hard-won practical knowledge about being God’s people in a threatening world...
