This Celtic cross is not set with in a circle as most modern portrayals are. For the most part Celtic crosses in manuscripts of the 6th - 9th centuries did not use the circle. However the stone crosses did, which leads many historians to believe the primary purpose of the circle was to prevent the arms of the cross falling off.
