God and the darkness of faith


When I was young my family took vacations in County Donegal in the north-west of Ireland. We loved its beautiful beaches and rugged countryside. However, Atlantic rainstorms, sweeping in from the west, made Donegal a very wet place indeed, and one of my main memories of those distant days is sitting inside the family car, waiting for the rain to stop. On these occasions my parents would open a Thermos flask of coffee. The steam condensed on the cold windows and every now and then my father would get out his handkerchief to wipe the glass and check if it was still raining. Donegal was still there, of course; it was just that we couldn’t see it very well through our misted windows – it was blurred and fuzzy...
