Every educationalist knows that one of the best teaching aids is a memorable image. Here’s a one-liner from the journalist Sydney J. Harris (1917– 86) that I came across years ago when trying to work out how best to instil the basics of Christian theology into my students! ‘Pupils are more like oysters than sausages.’ What exactly did he mean by that? I paused and tried to work it out. Happily, an explanation followed: ‘The job of teaching is not to stuff them and then seal them up, but to help them open and reveal the riches within.’...
