I grew up in Lincolnshire in a village called Hibaldstow, in the northern part of the county. It is a little more than 48 km (20 miles) north of Lincoln, and was then on the main road, the A15, which followed the route of the ancient Roman road known as Ermine Street. Possibly once or twice each summer my parents used to take us along the road to Lincoln to visit an aunt who lived beyond Lincoln in Newark...
