In the World and Also of the World
1 Kings 20:1-21: 7
I am getting ready for a task force that is meeting next week to discuss the use of the Bible in the Anglican Communion worldwide. The meeting will be complicated because we include members of the Episcopal Church in the United States as well as people who have left the Episcopal Church and in effect formed an alternative Anglican Church in the United States. The latter includes several parishes near where I live, and that development has resulted in monumentally expensive court cases to decide whether church buildings belong to the Episcopal Church or whether parishes that leave can take their buildings with them. Now, it’s easy enough to accept that splits are happening in the church; that has been so from the beginning of the church’s history, but there seems to be something odd about Christians taking one another to court in connection with them (as Paul notes in 1 Corinthians 6). How do we go about living in the world but living as people of God?...
