There are more positive and less positive understandings of human nature. The word zebub means fly, so the title “Master Zebub” or “Lord Zebub” would mean “Lord Fly” or “Lord of the Fly.” Now Lord of the Flies was a mid-twentieth-century novel by William Golding. The novel starts in the manner of the television series Lost, with an air crash on a remote island, survived only by some preteen boys. They seek to find a way of living together, but their story embodies a rather gloomy understanding of how that attempt might be expected to work out; there is much conflict among the boys. The Gospels also use a similar-sounding title, Beelzebul, to refer to Satan; in Hebrew, “Master Zebul” would mean something like “Exalted Master.” It is a plausible title for a Canaanite god...
