When I was an assistant pastor, a leading political figure in the Church of England came to speak at a conference at our church, and talked about policies for which he was working in the Church of England. It was clear that the man was a skilled political operator; he knew how to get things done. During his address, my rector whispered to me, “It’s just as well that man is a Christian, he would be a rogue if he were not.” Actually, it’s hard to be someone devoted to God and also someone who is good at getting things done. It’s easier to be someone who is devoted to God but doesn’t know how to get things done, or to be a Christian who seems just as ruthless as the rest of the world...
