“Helping” can have a variety of connotations. On one occasion a tire came off my wife’s wheelchair when we were on our way to church. As I was bending down trying to get the tire back on, with Ann still in the chair, a car driver stopped and “helped” me get it back on. His lending me a hand was a great help and maybe prevented us from being late for church, but if he hadn’t stopped, I would eventually have managed to get the tire back on; at least, on other occasions I did so. But two people could do the job more easily. On the other hand, on occasions when Ann had pneumonia and couldn’t breathe properly, so that I had to take her to Urgent Care, our need for help was quite different. It was a life-and-death matter, and without medical professionals I was helpless...
