I’ve just started reading a social history of Britain since the end of the 1939–1945 war. It thus begins with the celebration of the allies’ victory over Nazi Germany, personalized as Winston Churchill’s victory over Adolf Hitler (today someone was contemporizing that conflict again in the upcoming World Cup soccer game between England and Germany). The war victory over Nazi Germany was Churchill’s finest hour. Yet in the parliamentary election that soon followed, the British people forsook Churchill and elected Clement Atlee as prime minister. You could say that it illustrates how pride comes before a fall, as long as you mean this in the Old Testament sense, where pride isn’t so much a sinful attitude as the fact of being in a position of majesty and honor. Even if they are not sinfully attached to their prestige and achievements, people in such positions often fall from them...
