In an hour’s time, I am off to our diocesan convention, where clergy and laypeople will make decisions about policies and initiatives for the coming year. We will begin by asking for God’s guidance and wisdom in connection with our discussions and decisions, but we won’t then expect a number of divine interventions to tell us what to decide. I guess that theologically we assume or hope or trust that God’s wisdom operates through our exercising our human wisdom. There are indications within the Scriptures of another way of looking at this process. God relates to us like a parent to (adult) children, telling us to go and make our decisions and then going along with those decisions. You could say it’s a frightening aspect of God’s way of running the world that God leaves decisions to us in that way...
