When my wife and I got married fifty-one weeks ago, we discovered the Episcopal Prayer Book’s “Daily Devotions for Individuals and Families,” four one-page sets of psalms, Scripture readings, and prayers that you can use when you wake up, at lunch, at dinner, and before going to sleep. They are a version of the “liturgy of the hours” that goes back to the early Christian centuries and has appeared in various forms in different Christian confessions. We have found this version a great way of framing our lives—we can almost invariably begin and end the day with them, and we use the midday and early evening forms when we are at home for lunch and dinner and thus reset our minds on God during the day...
