Yesterday I received what initially seemed a puzzling invitation to a weekly, early-morning prayer meeting, described as “sacred space for a variety of prayer traditions.” It seemed puzzling because I always thought of space as a place, but of course we can talk about space as a stretch of time, and it looks as if this sacred space is a sacred time. And I have now discovered that the idea of such a sacred space has become of some importance in the way people think about spirituality. I also suspected that part of the sacredness was that this time would be a time of quiet and reflectiveness that we need in our noisy and busy lives...
