2 Samuel 3: 1- 4: 12

One of my colleagues holds a Bible study at his house for men he got to know through an organization that seeks to provide accommodation for homeless people in our city; they are typically people who have prison records and/or who have battled alcoholism or other addictions. Membership of the Bible study grows through word of mouth. The men had been reading John’s Gospel and then for some reason started to read 2 Samuel, and some of them came alive when they read the stories about Abner’s gang fighting Joab’s gang and Abner killing Asahel and Joab killing Abner. As they read these stories, their eyes widened. If God could be involved with the kind of people who appear in 2 Samuel, maybe God could be involved with these men themselves, who have acted in comparable ways...
