We had squirrels in our garden in England and on our patio in California, and in both places I have threatened to make squirrel casserole. Ann protested because she likes the squirrels; other people protest because they are repelled by the idea. In Britain rabbit features regularly in the supermarket butchery, but not in California. In France they eat frogs and snails, which makes Brits feel funny. The Scots eat haggis, which starts with sheep intestines, and that makes English people feel funny. My father took lard sandwiches to work; I wasn’t too thrilled when one day at high school I found I had picked up his sandwiches by mistake. In the north of England a traditional breakfast delicacy is black pudding, made basically of pig’s blood and suet (the Irish version adds pig’s liver). I’m not enthusiastic about that either...
