Our church shows up at a local homeless shelter to make dinner for the residents there once a month or so. Homeless “shelter” could give a false impression. Before I went there, I imagined something rather makeshift, almost like the shelters in which Israel lived on the way from Egypt to the promised land. The shelter we visit is nice and modern, and (if I might say so) we prepare rather a nice dinner. But one of the men there said the other week, “This is home for all of us, but none of us are at home here.”...
