At a concert last night a singer was telling us the background to a song about her grandfather. He was French-Canadian, spoke mostly in French, and died when she was a child. For both reasons she feels she never really got to know him, and she often looks at a 1920s photograph of his marriage to her grandmother, in which she imagines she can see a mischievous look in his eye, and in her grandmother’s eye a look that says, “What have I let myself in for?” The song imagines how her grandfather was thinking on that day, but it is imagination; she has no way of knowing if she gets him right...
