Genesis 24: 21-48
The first of the “Four Spiritual Laws” that have been the starting point for many people coming to faith in Christ is that “God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life.” The law is supported by scriptural verses affirming God’s love and God’s desire that we might have life and have it abundantly. Yet somehow, in spelling out the implications of this law, people often infer that it means that God has a detailed plan for what school one should go to and what job one should do—and for whom to marry. I make myself unpopular with my students sometimes by suggesting that there is no indication of this in the Bible (and that it would be odd, because God is a loving Father, and truly loving fathers do not have plans for how their children should live their lives). Yet sometimes God does have such a plan for an individual’s life because there is a particular role God wants that person to fulfill. Moses is an example, and so is Jeremiah (and they illustrate how God’s plan for a person’s life is quite likely to be unwelcome). So is Abraham, and so is Isaac...
