Genesis 33:18-34:31


There were a couple in the seminary who got into a tangle in their relationship. The man had lost his wife in an accident. He seemed to be doing all the right things in the way he coped: grieving but keeping her memory alive, while getting on with life and trying to establish a new life pattern. The woman had never been married but wanted to be. She knew the wife and cared about her, and like the rest of us, admired the way he coped with his loss. Like other people, she tried to express her support of him in practical ways, offering him a meal or asking him out. A relationship developed, and they slept together, but then he said it had to stop because he was not in a position to commit himself to her. By this time she had much invested in her dream of a life with him, and there was a breakup that everyone knew about, with each side giving his or her version of the story. When that kind of thing happens, it’s often impossible for anyone outside the relationship to understand the dynamics or the rights and wrongs. It’s probably impossible for the people themselves. It’s the same when a couple divorce. There are commonly two irreconcilable stories, and people outside have to be wary of thinking they understand...
