The Sin of Sodom
Genesis 19: 1-14

I have a number of friends and acquaintances who are attracted to members of the same sex or are in long-term, committed, quasi-marital or actually marital relationships with members of the same sex. I don’t take the view that same-sex relationships are just as valid as heterosexual relationships, but neither do I think they are inherently more terrible than various other ways of falling short of God’s vision for sexual relationships. But one thing that strikes me is that my gay friends and acquaintances are lovely people. A few years ago, for instance, our neighbor was diagnosed as having Parkinson’s disease, and because my wife is disabled, his partner would talk with me about the issues involved in long-term care for the person you love. Eventually he came to the realization that he needed to reshape his life and get a less demanding job and think about early retirement in order to be able to care for his partner, and in order to do so they left our condo complex where they were very much at home and part of the community. There are nasty gay people as there are nasty straight people, but straight people can demonize gay people...
