When I was a young assistant pastor in London (what would now be called a youth pastor, but youth pastors hadn’t been invented yet), one of the prize members of our largely middleclass youth group was a teenager from the local projects, with which the suburban church otherwise had little contact. He had come to know Christ through the friendship of an older member of the youth group (who himself became an effective pastor in more downtown areas), but he was still capable of getting into trouble with the law, and so once or twice I found myself having to accompany him to court in order to speak with a judge on his behalf to testify to his being a good guy really. I can’t remember how effective this was. . . .
