Eliphaz rewrites Jo’s Life Rather Than Revise His Own Theology
Job 22: 1-30

My early years of teaching coincided with a time when many churches were rediscovering the possibility of praying for sick people to be healed and of finding that many were healed. It was an exciting rediscovery, but it raised the question of why some people are healed and others aren’t (it was a pressing question for me because my wife had multiple sclerosis, and God never healed her, though we saw God achieve things through her in her illness). You could buy books with lists of the ten reasons why people didn’t get healed. When people asked that question, the result was to raise tricky issues for the people praying and/or for the person who was sick. To the burden of being sick was now an added burden. Is my not being healed my own fault? Do I lack sufficient faith, or am I guilty of some sin I haven’t confessed?...
