Today’s newspaper contains a long excerpt from a book about a gigantic fraud that brought about the collapse of a Wall Street financial empire during the financial crisis of the first decade of the twenty-first century. The head of the business in question had defrauded investors of billions of dollars. His victims included many charitable and religious foundations and hospitals. The man who devised the fraud had been a prominent, respected figure in the world of finance in the United States. On his exposure and trial, he was sentenced to 150 years in prison. One of his sons, who was allegedly implicated in the fraud, committed suicide; his father describes this as the most awful aspect of the whole affair...
