Description
You Don’t Deserve It
Deuteronomy 9: 4- 10: 22
I spotted an advertisement for a “You Deserve It!” event, “a quality day for women to relax, have fun, learn some new things, and spend time with other wonderful women.” The last phrase is a giveaway. In inviting everyone to see themselves as wonderful, it presupposes that they probably do not always feel like that about themselves and might like to come to a day that will make them feel thus. Then I came across a travel agency called “You Deserve It”—you deserve that vacation, and I discovered a motivational speaker who markets a DVD with the secrets to a happy life called You Deserve It! The use of the phrase reminded me of McDonald’s encouragement to “take a break—you deserve it!” The phrase “you deserve it” makes me uneasy. What are we doing to one another or what is life doing to us that we need that encouragement?...
