Is God Not Good or Not Sovereign?
Job 34 1-30
A student has been blowing fuses to me about having to read books that are full of words like eschatology and pneumatology and sentences about God’s “ontological revelatory self-communication and self-transcendence” or about “supralapsarian-soteriological theater.” These books (he says with irony) are noetically confusing. Reading them is like having your mouth full of cotton candy (candy floss, in Britain) instead of food. And the contributions that his fellow students make in class are similar. One of my responses is that students are inclined to think that long words ending with “logy” are a good thing (and of course some such long words are useful as technical terms). Such words sound as if they are saying something impressive, though they tend to dissolve like cotton candy if one asks what they mean...
