The Story Reaches Its Lowest Point (II)
JUDGES 20:1-48

For some years now there has been ongoing tension between Russia and Georgia. Sometimes it seems open to being characterized as a little comical; Russia banned the import of Georgian wine on the grounds that it did not meet proper standards, and Georgians said that Russians had no insight about wine anyway. But sometimes it threatened to escalate into military conflict, and this then interestingly caused consternation among Orthodox Christians in the two countries because it opened up the possibility of their fighting each other, which had never previously been a prospect. Christians in the rest of the world, of course, have not usually been troubled about fighting one another; their national citizenship took priority over their oneness in Christ. A “Modest Proposal for Peace” made by the Mennonite Central Committee suggested that the Christians of the world agree that they will not kill one another. Such an agreement would have substantially reduced killing in war in the twentieth century. Surely our oneness in the body of Christ makes it impossible that we should kill one another?...
