I have recently been to two concerts where the band included musicians from British towns within an hour or two of my own hometown—singer Graham Nash and guitarist Slash. Both have lived in Los Angeles for decades, and I don’t know whether they are now U.S. citizens, but if not, they live with the oddities of being resident aliens here, as I do. We have certain rights but also certain insecurities; we can never take our residence for granted. Even as citizens, at one time if any of us had been women we would not have had the right to vote. If any of us were black, then at one time we too would not have had that right. In Britain, Roman Catholics and Jews long had no right to vote, and in both cases, votes for women came much later...
