From time to time my wife asks me what I’m thinking. She has to do so because whereas she instinctively tells me what she’s thinking, I’m not good at doing so. But it’s a potentially scary question. Occasionally I might be thinking something that could be hurtful or could otherwise get me into trouble. I then have to decide whether to tell the truth or lie. Then sometimes she sees though me anyway. Just now I claimed to have blanked out everything from before we got married six months ago, and she responded, “That’s the biggest lie of all time.” The Bible makes clear that God can see through us, but it also implies that God doesn’t always choose to do so, because it indicates that God has surprises, and especially disappointments— though not ones that he can’t handle...
