“We can’t wait till you come to see us next year,” a friend in the Philippines said. “I can’t wait till the concert on Saturday,” a singer-songwriter said. “We can’t wait to meet your new wife,” a friend said. “I can’t wait for Christmas,” another friend said. “We can’t wait to move into our own house,” my son said. “I can’t wait for the party,” a friend said. “I can’t wait for our wedding,” my then-fiancée said. “I can’t wait for the end of the quarter,” a student said. I am amused each time someone uses this common U.S. expression; it makes me want to respond, “You will just have to,” which would be to miss the point. If I say, “I can’t wait for the end of the quarter” (for instance), I mean I am not going to wait; I am going to the beach now. But the expression simply means “I’m really looking forward to it and wish I didn’t have to wait.”...
