I remember the winter’s day when I announced to the students at the theological college in England where I used to be the principal that I would be leaving the coming summer. To my surprise, it aroused a feeling of anxiety among a number of students. Maybe I was deceiving myself in thinking that it wouldn’t make much difference to them; the governing body would surely appoint someone else whose views, attitudes, and aims were not so different from mine. Maybe I was deceiving myself about the difference that any individual makes to the leadership of an institution such as a seminary or a church.
