I just saw a fabulous picture of the earth taken from above the North Pole. I know in theory that Canada, Greenland, Russia, Norway, and Alaska almost meet in the Arctic, but I am so used to the regular Mercator Projection world map that I don’t usually think in those terms. It was a fabulous picture but also a worrying one because it showed how much the Arctic ice pack has shrunk over the last decade. It opens up whole new possibilities in connection with oil drilling and fishing. But of course the bad news is that it is another sign of how fast the earth is warming and of how the shores of many countries all over the world may soon be taken over by the ocean.
