1 – “Our Father…”

As we reflect on Jesus’ journey to the cross, we recall words from the Lord’s Prayer
The purple colour of this season is a reminder to us of this season of prayer with themes of penitence and sorrow for sin.
The purple cloth was put on Jesus by those who mocked him.
Yet it may also remind us of Jesus’ story about the robe of welcome given by the Loving Father at the home-coming of his Son.

Jesus taught his disciples to address God as Father and when Jesus prayed, he prayed ‘Abba, Father’.
As he was dying on the cross, Jesus prayed: “Father, into your hands I commit my Spirit.”

So we pray together:
“Our Father…”

2 – “Hallowed be thy name

As we reflect on Jesus’ journey to the cross, we recall words from the Lord’s Prayer
In Roman times, when a man was condemned to death on a cross, a piece of parchment or wood was nailed to his cross declaring his name and the crime of which he was accused.
On the cross, Jesus’ name was used to taunt him; his title was used in mockery.
Yet because of Jesus’ death, the cross has become to us a Holy Sign.

We remember that Jesus taught us to pray Hallowed be thy name.

So we pray together:
“Our Father…”

3 – “Thy will be done

As we reflect on Jesus’ journey to the cross, we recall words from the Lord’s Prayer
The towel and basin are symbols of service. Before the Last Supper, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. When the disciples quarrelled about who was the greatest, he told them, “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus taught us to pray Thy will be done

So we pray together:
“Our Father…”
