There were animals everywhere – lots of mess and noise – and the smell, well, it was awful, just like a cattle market. I was pushed and shoved, and we couldn’t get near the entrances to the Temple courts. We had to let our place in the queue go so that we could find our friends and see if they could lend us some money.
It was then that I noticed Jesus – there in the Temple courtyard with his friends. He was looking at us, and I could see the anger in his eyes. At first I thought it was something we’d done, that we’d broken some law or other, but it wasn’t us he was angry with.
Well, he went charging up to the money-changers’ tables. ‘What do you think you are doing? Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!’ He ran from one table to another, tipping them over. It was as though a great energy had been released in him. Money, pigeons, feathers, stools and tables flew through the air.
