Angels are one thing; angels as God’s heavenly council, discussing policy, are another; ‘the Accuser’ (the word ‘Satan’ is a title before it is a proper name) as himself an angel, a celestial Director of Public Prosecutions, is harder still; God giving this DPP carte blanche to see if he can find a charge against an unsuspecting human – well, this is beyond the pale. Yet this is what we see, as the prologue to Job takes us round to the back of the stage. Behind the drama and debate of Job and his friends, this is what is ‘really’ going on...
