ONE DAY AT A TIME
Meditations for Carers

3 Danger! Unexploded bomb!

Romans 8.16, GNB

What’s your flammability score? You’re probably just like me: I work, as full-time as I can, as a writer. I am my husband’s fulltime carer. And I also look after the house. And the garden. And the finances. And the car. And the cooking. And the laundry. And deal with the daily disasters. This is all familiar to you because you’re doing it too.

To keep going, because there are always things that must get done and there’s nobody else here to do them, we may have slipped into the habit of shutting off our feelings – of exhaustion, resentment, misery, frustration – just to be able to get on with the tasks. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. I know of no truly leak-proof tape for emotions! And when we hit rock bottom, that slow puncture of emotion can threaten to explode and damage us and our hard-won peace, like a suicide bomber in its potentially devastating impact...
