ONE DAY AT A TIME
Meditations for Carers

1. And the lucky winner is...

1 Corinthians 10.13

I’ll never win the Lottery – because I never buy a Lottery ticket. On the other hand, I didn’t apply for this job of being a carer. Did you? I don’t think anyone applies. It just happens. A baby is born needing extra care, a child has a severe accident or illness, a parent or spouse becomes ill – and you become the carer. If it happened very suddenly, it’s unlikely that you had time really to think about it. If it came on gradually, you may not have noticed what was happening until it was too late.

But your life has changed radically. Now you’re on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. And unlike lorry drivers with tachographs, you have nobody keeping an eye on you to make sure you’re having enough rest and time off. In fact, the State pays you more, the more hours you put in! It’s easy – and normal – to feel trapped...
