Reflection/Meditation: My Father’s Way
Many years ago a story was told by the Hebrew people – indeed it is still being told today. It sounds something like this:
‘My father was a wandering Aramean; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien and there became a great nation. When the Egyptians treated the people harshly, by imposing hard labour on them, they cried to the LORD, the God of their ancestors; and he heard them. He rescued them and he brought them to a new land, flowing with milk and honey.’
Perhaps all that seems distant and in another time, but there are strong echoes of that story in my life, and may well be in yours.
This is my version
‘My father was from a working-class family with few educational opportunities.
He worked well with his hands, but was the victim of closures and cutbacks.
He served his country during World War Two, but had no position waiting for him on his .return.
Every job he was given he did quietly and diligently, but for little reward.
He ended his days too soon with an illness which may well have been brought on by his wartime experiences.
The guidance he gave me was of the simplest kind.
