When you give people presents, you can get into a lot of trouble, some of which you deserve. You can spend time and money finding what you hope will be just right for someone and find it was just the wrong thing: “You think I’m that size? You think I like that kind of thing?” (I’ve done that). You can buy someone the record you want to listen to or the book you want to read or the food processor you want them to use or that you yourself want to experiment with (I’ve done that). You can give on the cheap by using a discount coupon you carefully saved (I’ve done that) or by buying from the thrift store (I’ve done that). You can pick a bunch of flowers from someone’s garden and give those to your beloved; that would get you into trouble if you got found out (let alone what the garden’s owner thought). But you could pick a bunch of wildflowers that also cost you nothing and get away with it (I’ve done that). Giving needs to be a bit selfless, and it should be the best you can do...
