A week ago, our church had a homecoming/harvest barbecue. Alas, I missed it because I had arranged to be elsewhere, but I was there in my imagination, partly because I know these guys know how to barbecue. As I write now, in my imagination I can smell the sausage, ribs, and chicken grilling. To make up for my loss, next Saturday I am holding a beginning-of-the-school-year barbecue for some of my students, and (being a cheat) I shall get some of the excellent prepared and marinated chicken from our Hispanic store and grill it on the new barbecue in our complex. As human beings we do this kind of thing because it tastes nice but also because it does something to personal relationships. We don’t just meet in church and in the classroom; eating together adds another dimension to those relationships...
