As I write, hundreds of people are encamped in a park near Wall Street, their base for protesting the fact that the 1 percent of the U.S. population, of whom Wall Street is a symbol, have a greater net worth than the entire bottom 90 percent, with many of the protesters being people without jobs and thus at the bottom of the 90 percent (but my wife likes to remind me that we in the West are the 10 percent to the two-thirds world’s 90 percent). In cities in Israel, hundreds of its citizens are likewise encamped in tent cities in the name of a similar cause, with additional resentment at the cost of security spending and of concessions to special interest groups. In India, where increasing prosperity has also not benefited millions of ordinary people, a man called Anna Hazare recently undertook a twelve-day hunger strike until parliament agreed to some of his demands concerning an anticorruption measure to hold public officials accountable...
