Before coming to the United States to resume being an ordinary professor, I was principal of a theological college in England, a position that is a cross between being president, provost, and dean of a U.S. seminary, but on a much smaller scale. I had become the principal at a time when my first wife’s multiple sclerosis was affecting her more than it did when we were younger, and as I began the job, I was concerned about how I would cope with the combination of responsibility for the seminary and for Ann—as, I suspect, were some of my colleagues and members of the board. So I was praying about that issue, as I think they probably were. Then at the service when I was installed, one of my friends received this word from God to give to me: “I will make the north wind your warmth, the snow your purity, the frost your brightness, and the night sky of winter your illumination.” It was more than proved over the following ten years...
