The first time I stayed with my friends in Germany I explained to them just how beautiful the north of England was. They had never seen it, and they had only heard a little about the hills and woods, the mountains, the ancient castles and the beautiful beaches. I was eager to tell them how many lovely places there were for a holiday or a visit. Most tourists who visit England come to see London; many then go on to Oxford and Cambridge, and particularly Stratford-on-Avon, where William Shakespeare was born. A much smaller number go to the north of the country and discover for themselves its softer, wilder delights. I was enthusiastic in my boasting about it to my friends...
