Judah 1-4

In my teens and my early twenties, one of my passions was rock-climbing. I wouldn’t say I was an utterly fearless climber; I had a proper respect for danger, and didn’t try to do things which were too far outside my competence. But I relished the challenge, and have many happy memories of the exhilaration that comes when you’re stuck halfway up a bare rock with nothing above or below you and spend twenty minutes looking for the next foothold.

In any case, I had no fear of heights. I could stand on the edge of a massive cliff and look down without a tremor. I could climb up the tower of a cathedral and look over the parapet at the people far, far below. On the one occasion in that period when I visited New York, the skyscrapers were a natural attraction. Looking down thousands of feet was no problem, and I felt patronizingly sorry for those who, as the saying goes, ‘have no head for heights’...
