As a typical young man growing up in England after the Second World War, I was never taught to sew. I can hardly manage to replace a button on a shirt, let alone do anything more complicated with needle and thread.

But I have sometimes been fascinated by the way in which a small thread, which in itself is not very strong, and can be snapped with one sharp tug, will hold two pieces of cloth together very firmly, and withstand all kinds of pressure, once there are enough stitches in a line, and close enough together.
