‘How did they do it?’

We stood looking up at the west front of one of France’s great medieval cathedrals. It was massive, majestic and awe-inspiring. At the same time, the overall shaping of the stone was so beautifully worked that it seemed to float in the air, as though it might almost be a gateway into heaven. A builder in the twenty-first century would find it a daunting task to do anything like it, even with all the modern technology available. How did they do it a thousand years ago?...
